The Adventure of Aging
The definition of adventure is “an unusual, exciting, and possibly risky experience or undertaking,” Well, aging can be pretty risky, and sometimes we have to limit activities that nourish us. I had to do that when I chose to care for a loved one and later my own health. However, stepping out again can reconnect us. Yes, we all have our “stuff” - limitations which may be physical or financial, but that does not have to hold us back from a vibrant old age.
A recent survey by Road Scholar, a not-for-profit organization creating educational adventures for seniors, found that 94% of older adults who “age adventurously” report greater well-being, and many feel just as happy in their 50s, 60s, and beyond as they did in their 20s or 30s.
Longevity with purpose can be a great adventure - an exciting time where we can encounter all kinds of new experiences. Those anticipating or already in retirement may think of travel as their next adventure. Some seniors value more time with family & friends. Others want to explore a different job, volunteer opportunity or hobby. Sometimes adventure is reading a good book or even writing one.
The purpose of Geezer Forum CdA is to develop that 'Adventure Mindset' as a recipe to help us feel natural exhilaration and expand our minds. It provides an opportunity to grow and learn meaningful lessons we might not be exposed to in everyday life. There's a thrill in stepping into uncertainty, boldly navigating uncharted territories and taking a risk—be it physical, emotional, or psychological.
Remember, a Geezer is not a grouchy old man, but the disguise of an aging, wise and vibrant person!
Thanks to all who attended “Salute to Veterans in Song and Story”. We raised $6,000 for Newby-ginnings. This non-profit organization provides resources, referrals and essential personal/household items to Veterans, Active Military and their families.
